The idea of hiring a professional to help you tidy may seem unnecessary and even a luxury.

You may think, “I don’t need a consultant. How hard can it be?”

Well….harder than you think. A lot of people run out of gas sooner than later. If you get through one or two categories, you’re doing well. The chances of keeping up with decluttering the rest of your home on your own are—sorry to say it, pretty low. The sad part is that, if you don’t finish, then you don’t get the amazing, lasting, life-changing effects of tidying.

Obstacles Abound!

There are so many things that can get you off track, even when you have the best intentions. Here are few common ones:

    1. You get overwhelmed. Making so many decisions can simply start to feel too hard and lead you to give up without experiencing the amazing benefits of a full tidying festival.
    2. You get distracted. Life happens, right? Work, family, friends, emails, texts, entertainment, Instagram…So many things to pull you away! And they usually seem, and sometimes are, more important than tidying.
    3. You get tired. The truth is that it can be draining shedding old skin. Keeping your energy up can be a challenge.
    4. You forget to practice self-needs, like drinking water, taking breaks, eating healthy snacks for energy.
    5. You lose sight of your goal and your vision for why you want to tidy, and the change you want to create in you life.

All of these are perfectly valid and understandable reasons, and just about everyone can relate to them.

So what’s the answer? Hire someone to help!

The most efficient answer is to hire a tidying consultant who knows how to anticipate and handle all of these obstacles as they come up.

Yes, it is a financial investment. But if you’re really wanting to get a handle on your clutter for good, it is worth every penny—I promise! As a former psychotherapist, I’ve been amazed at the immediate and long lasting results that come from the tidying process in a rapid period of time that can take months or years in therapy.

How does a consultant help?

How does a consultant help with these things? Let’s take them one by one. Let’s say you’ve hired me to be your consultant.

    1. You get overwhelmed. There is scientific research that proves that having a supportive person at your side when you’re facing a challenging task makes it seem less difficult. So along with my other skills, my supportive presence makes a real difference. I often hear clients say, “I couldn’t do this without you here!”
    2. You get distracted. Sometimes you may want to chat about a side story, like what happened the evening you wore that peach colored dress, which is fine. I stay alert, though, to wandering too far astray for too long, and I know of how to gently re-focus you so that you get the job done. And our regularly scheduled sessions will keep you focused in a way that is less likely on your own.
    3. You get tired. I’m trained to keep an eye on signs of losing steam and to make sure that you take breaks regularly, doing things like opening the windows, going for a brief walk, doing some stretching, sitting down—things to help shift your focus so that you can continue refreshed.
    4. You forget about self-needs. I keep a close eye on your needs, like drinking enough water, having snacks, and even breathing! (Yes , you could be holding your breath without realizing it!)
    5. You lose sight of your goal and vision. There’s an important reason why you’ve decided to tidy in the first place, which we discuss at some length at the beginning of our first session. It will be my job to remind you periodically of the vision that is motivating you. I help you keep your eye on the prize so that you can run the whole marathon.

I’m sure you’ve had the experience of being in the midst of a project and having a hard time seeing the progress you’re making when you’re doing it. It can be intense and absorbing.

As an outsider and an experienced observer, I am in a position to help you recognize your progress and to  take stock of it each step of the way so that you feel encouraged to keep on going to the end.

It is my joy and delight to help you turn a burden into a joy—transforming your clutter into a supportive home space that lifts your spirit!
